The need for companionship may continue to be an important reason for honing one’s self-regulatory strength in today’s society. As social psychologists, we may have overlooked the role of self-regulation in acquiring group membership (see Seeley & Gardner, Chapter 20, this volume, for more on the interpersonal aspects of self-regulation). Because self-control seems to be such an important component of relationships, furthering research on this topic without considering interpersonal factors may hinder theoretical development.
