I can clearly remember my elementary school days, when my third-grade teacher would read to the class for the last hour of every Friday. One of the reasons I can remember that so clearly is that she chose to read to us the Little House on the Prairie series by Laura Ingalls Wilder, a series that held no fascination for me, an eight-year-old boy. Still, it was the most positive memory I carry from that year. Reading out loud to children is so powerful that she could have read the technical specifications for a washing machine and I would have enjoyed the experience.

The less boys read over time, the more difficult it is for them to enter the world of reading later on. Reading out loud to boys sparks brain activity by offering auditory stimuli. 1 Listening to complex language read out loud improves vocabulary, grammar, and sentence and story structure awareness. It does not do much to improve spelling, but beyond that, listening to stories read out loud can make boys better readers. The bad news is that reading out loud is not a significant part of most children’s lives.
