The second question is whether students are, on the whole, willing to disclose what is going on when they are asked to describe bullying. How students perceive bullying The simplest way of discovering how students perceive ‘bullying’ is to ask them to draw a picture to illustrate bullying at their school. This Dr Slee and I did at a number of schools in the Adelaide area in 1990. The students obliged, and here are some typical drawings.

But there can certainly be worries about how the information can be used. For example, a child may be subsequently labelled ‘bully’ as a result of receiving many nominations as a bully from others in the class—and the label may stick and make it difficult for him or her to receive fair treatment from others even if the bullying behaviour stops. For this reason such information should remain highly confidential, the property (I would argue) of the researcher, to be destroyed after it has been used to address the research problem for which it was obtained.

Although what is called harassment can be very damaging, the term is often employed to describe less violent and abusive behaviour. For more physical forms of aggression, the term ‘bullying’ is more frequently used. Both words can be, and sometimes are, used to describe abuses of power that include a wide range of abusive behaviours.
