They have had much less success in preventing change in the spoken language. The economic and social upheavals of the nineteenth century resulted in the rise of large industrial cities whose distinctive dialects now differ from the rural areas around them and also from high prestige English; many millions of speakers use them. As a result, multiple negatives and hundreds of other ‘non-standard’ features continue to enjoy a flourishing life.

They seem to have been successful in codifying a set of conventions appropriate for the written language— conventions which have not changed greatly since that time. The orthography, for example, has changed very little since Dr Johnson codified the spelling in his 28 STANDARD ENGLISH AND THE COMPLAINT TRADITION dictionary.
