That connection is that the objects that linguistics studies are the objects that speakers use, and the objects that speakers use are among the objects that pragmatics studies. Those objects are sentence-types; when we talk, we use sentence-types. There is much within that formulation that demands clariﬁcation. One word to become clear about is the verb ‘use’, and another word to become clear about is the noun ‘sentence’.
Conﬁrmation questions are directed not toward the completion of sentencetypes but toward the completion of utterances. To a great degree, they address the infelicities identiﬁed by Austin (1962).
