It is expected that schools contain classes with varying residuals, both positive and negative, as the residual estimates are components of the random part of the regression equation and are thus assumed to be independent. However, these results show that the aggregation of data to the school-level under the single-level model, or analysis of only the school-level residuals under the multilevel model, fails to identify individual classes that may be achieving significantly ‘higher than’ or ‘lower than’ expected performance as opposed to other classes within their school.
Classes and schools were also labelled as having either: (1) ‘higher than expected performance’; (2) ‘as expected performance’; and, (3) ‘lower than expected performance’, under each regression method. As mentioned, categorisation was dependent 39 ELDERFIELD AND WAUGH not only on the regression method applied, but also on how the confidence intervals were calculated. Only one school was categorised as achieving higher than expected performance under the single-level means-on-means model, while under the multilevel model, all schools were seen to have achieved as expected performance.
